Abstract: An effective Hamiltonian describing interaction between generic fast and slow systems is obtained in the strong interaction limit. The result is applied for studying the effect of quantum phase transition as a bifurcation of the ground state of the slow subsystem. Examples such as atom-field and atom-atom interactions are analyzed in detail. In the non-degenerate case (when both transitions can be accessed independently) a complete reconstruction is possible. In the degenerate case (when both transitions are excited simultaneously), the complete reconstruction is achievable only for a single atom in the ? configuration. For multiple ? atoms, or even a single atom in the ? configuration, only partial reconstruction is possible. Examples of one- and two-atom cases are explicitly considered. " 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.
