Abstract: Composites of post-consumer HDPE with agave fibre were prepared by single screw extrusion using azodicarbonamide (ACA) as foaming agent to increase surface area. The absorption capacity of the composite coated with chitosan was evaluated in Cd 2+ and Cu 2+ solutions. A chemical pre-treatment was applied to the composite improving the interfacial interaction with chitosan to enhance compatibility. Chitosan gel is used to coat the modified hydrophilic polymer surface. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AA) was used to measure metal uptake after contact with solution in batch studies. Adsorption Isotherms were obtained at three different temperatures and pH. The experimental results show the composite's ability to immobilize chitosan on its surface and capacity for metal ion absorption. The equilibrium isotherms for Cd and Cu adsorption on chitosan-coated composite were described by the Langmuir model and maximum adsorption is obtained. This material represents an attractive low cost recycled material to adsorb metal ions from polluted waters.
