Abstract: A new approach for the problem of diagonalizing nonlinear Hamiltonians is presented. For demonstration purposes, the method is applied to some relevant nonlinear problems in quantum optics. Some interesting dynamical features arising from the description in terms of the corresponding effective Hamiltonians are discussed.
